About Picture Books for Children
Go ahead, judge a picture book by its
cover!
More often than not, the cover is what draws us to a picture
book for children in the first place. It is what makes
us pick it up at the book store, or the library. As we
turn the pages, we are drawn in by the story, the art
work carefully created by the illustrator, book designer,
art director and publisher. Illustrations that clarify,
or enhance the plot.
Good characters are depicted with some sensitivity, and
are authentic.
When you are trying to choose a picture
book for children, we recommend you consider 3 things:
the story, the illustrations (includes book design), and
how the two work together.
- What age group is the picture book
intended for?
- Does it fulfill an interest or need
for the intended age group?
- How will the book be used? For entertainment?
As a learning/teaching tool?
- How much will the book be used? (hardcover
books are more durable than paperback editions, but
paperbacks are less expensive)
- Is there a better picture book
on the subject, (is the subject explained well enough
for example)?
If you like the story, the child you are
buying the picture book for, will most likely like it
too:
A good story will have universal appeal,
appeal to a range of ages, and have vivid imagery and
imaginative details.
A good picture book
for children will have:
- A theme that comes out naturally
- Events will happen in a logical way
- A plot that makes the reader want to
turn the pages
- Good depiction of the characters
- Dialogue that is entertaining to the
young reader
- Rich vocabulary with language
play (children enjoy repetition, rhyme, or patterns
they can look forward to and expect)
